چکیده

parently fears that buried animals could contaminate groundwater and that emissions from incinerators could contaminate the air. All states allow dead pigs to be either buried, incinerated, or taken for rendering, and some states also allow swine carcasses to be fed to animals (e.g., Minnesota) or to be composted (e.g., Missouri).2Fewer swine farms now have the option of rendering swinecarcasses because fewerthan halfof the approximately800 plants operating in the 1970s are operating today.3Since most of the plants that had odor problems have closed, most of the public's concern with the rendering industry has been allayed. Farmers, however, are also concerned about the environment and, in addition, about the cost of disposingof mortalities. Consequently, they are searching for alternative processing methods that are inexpensive, environmentallysafe, and that adhere to the stricter regulationsgoverningwaste disposal.

Air sampling and analysis method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) related to field-scale mortality composting operations.

In biosecure composting, animal mortalities are so completely isolated during the degradation process that visual inspection cannot be used to monitor progress or the process status. One novel approach is to monitor the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by decaying mortalities and to use them as biomarkers of the process status. A new method was developed to quantitatively analyze pote...

Performance Evaluation of a Passively-Aerated Plastic-Wrapped Composting System Designed for Emergency Disposal of Swine Mortalities

Monitoring of a passively-aerated plastic-wrapped mortality composting system designed for emergency disposal of diseased swine highlighted the importance of the physical characteristics of materials used to envelop the carcasses. Inadequate moisture was a problem when using envelope materials such as ground cornstalks or straw having low density and high air-filled porosity. High O2 concentrat...

Dairy Cattle Mortality Management via Anaerobic Digestion

With the decline in the number of rendering operations due to industry consolidation and concern about Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) transmission, disposal of dairy and beef cattle mortalities by rendering either is not an option or is prohibitively expensive in many areas of the United States. On-site burial remains an alternative in many states, but impact on ground water quality is ...

Economic Costs of Open Static Pile and In- Vessel Systems for Routine Mortality Management on Swine Farms

In the U.S. the use of composting to manage on-farm swine mortality has increased from 10.5 to 35.9% from 1994 to 2006 (USDA:APHIS, VS, CEAH 2001 and 2007). Traditionally, the most popular method of composting has been the open static pile (OSP) in bins, piles, or windrows, with management of primary, secondary and curing stages. In recent years, in-vessel (IV) systems have been used increasing...

Analysis of the Structure of the Bacterial Community in the Livestock Manure-based Composting Process*

We investigated the structure of bacterial communities present in livestock manure-based composting processes and evaluated the bacterial succession during the composting processes. Compost samples were derived separately from swine manure, dairy manure and sewage sludge. The structure of the bacterial community was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (...
